What is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP)? Though many people can call themselves a financial advisor, only properly educated and experienced individuals can qualify and apply for the designation of Certified Financial Planner. The license to use the marks CFP is authorized only by the CFP Board of Standards, which is a nonprofit professional regulatory organization. Besides meeting the educational & experience requirements; a background check; an ethic requirement; and a two-day examination must be passed. Though some feel that the two day examination is too difficult (pass rate is around 50%), the difficulty of the test is to insure that only the best qualified individuals will be allowed to obtain the designation of a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Peer review, continuing education, & ethical practices are all required in order to maintain the designation of a Certified Financial Planner.
