The license to use the marks CFP is authorized only by the CFP Board of Standards, which is a nonprofit professional regulatory organization. Besides meeting the educational & experience requirements; a background check; an ethic requirement; and a two-day examination must be passed. Though some feel that the two day examination is too difficult (pass rate is around 50%), the difficulty of the test is to insure that only the best qualified individuals will be allowed to obtain the designation of a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Peer review, continuing education, & ethical practices are all required in order to maintain the designation of a Certified Financial Planner.
